What's On
Portraits of Slovak and Czech Britain returns this January with a new exhibition at Peggy Jay Gallery (20–25 January 2026) and the next chapter of the project — the theatre production The Streets of London Are Paved with Gold, premiering at King Alfred Phoenix Theatre on 31 January and 1 February 2026. Building on the success of our September launch at The Nunnery Gallery, this phase continues to explore migration, identity, and community through photography, performance, and storytelling.

The exhibition opens with a special event on 20th January 2026 at 6:00 PM at Peggy Jay Gallery, Burgh House, Hampstead, London, and will then run daily from 21–25 January, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

The Streets of London Are Paved with Gold - Theatre Show
The theatre production The Streets of London Are Paved with Gold is the next chapter of the wider Portraits of Slovak and Czech Britain project. Inspired by Zuzana Slobodová’s book of the same title, the show brings to life selected migration stories featured in both the book and the exhibition, adding emotional depth and new perspectives through devised movement, text, and original music. Echoing the themes of the exhibition, the production reflects the universal migrant experience — the search for home, identity, and belonging, alongside stories of dreams, challenges, achievements, and community. Performed in Slovak and English, it mirrors the bilingual realities of those whose stories inspired the project.
Created during an intensive one-week rehearsal lab and directed by Zuzana Strnátová, with movement direction by Jana Zordan and costumes by Sára Šišková, the production transforms these narratives into a live, immersive experience.
Performed by: Simona Vrabcová, Rebeka Jurčaková, Shivone Dominguez-Blaščíková, Kristýna Havelková, Eliška Elley Jurčíková
The show premieres on 31 January 2026 at 7:00 PM, with a second performance on 1 February 2026 at 7:00 PM.
