Learning & Community Engagement

Workshops, learning and community engagement

Artist-led workshops and participatory programmes exploring identity, heritage, storytelling, theatre and creative practice with children, adults and community partners across the UK.

OUR APPROACH

Learning that grows from the work

Learning and community engagement sit alongside Slovak Theatre London's artistic programmes. Workshops are developed with artists, schools and community partners and shaped around the themes and creative methods within the wider work.

Activities may be connected with an exhibition or programme, developed as a focused studio workshop, or delivered as a standalone theatre and movement session. Each workshop is designed for its participants rather than treated as a standard format repeated in every setting.

PARTNER WITH US

Develop a workshop with us

Slovak Theatre London works with schools, cultural organisations, community groups, creative centres, individual artists and educators to develop workshops shaped around artistic practice, heritage, identity, storytelling and performance.

Workshops can accompany an exhibition or programme, respond to the needs of a particular age group, or take the form of a focused creative session for artists and community participants. We also welcome proposals from practitioners who would like to develop and deliver a workshop in collaboration with STL or as part of our learning programme.

Book or Sponsor a Workshop to arrange an existing STL workshop, request a tailored workshop, or fund a workshop for a school, community or group. Propose a Collaboration for artists, facilitators and educators who want to suggest, co-develop or deliver a workshop with STL.

EXHIBITION-LINKED WORKSHOPS

Learning with the People Behind the Portraits

Learning and participation add another dimension to Portraits of Slovak and Czech Britain. Several workshops were led by people whose own portraits and stories are featured in the exhibition, allowing visitors to meet the personalities behind the photographs and experience their knowledge, creativity and practice directly.

Rather than remaining only subjects within the exhibition, the featured personalities became active contributors to the programme. Through visual art, history, storytelling, movement, breath, rhythm and voice, they invited audiences to explore heritage, identity and creativity together.

Four public workshops accompanied the first two exhibitions. Three took place at the Nunnery Gallery in September 2025, followed by an expanded HERITAGE workshop at the Peggy Jay Gallery in January 2026. The sessions were created for different audiences, including children, families and adults.

STUDIO WORKSHOPS

Creative Innovation Lab in Birmingham

On 18 April 2026, Slovak Theatre London and Arténa Bratislava delivered two full-day Studio Workshops in Birmingham as part of the Creative Innovation Lab programme.

Arténa is the creative centre of Slovak Television and Radio, Slovakia's national public service broadcaster. The programme was funded through Slovakia's Recovery and Resilience Plan as part of a project supporting renewed connections with Slovak communities living abroad.

The workshops were organised in cooperation with the Association of Slovak Schools and Communities in the UK and the Slovak School in Birmingham, under the leadership of Dana Klampárová.

Around 30 people of different ages participated across the two workshops, exploring personal storytelling, cultural heritage, identity, visual communication and media project development.

Project HERITAGE: From Idea to Design and Realisation

Led by Rebeka Jurčacková

A practical visual workshop guiding participants through the development of a multidisciplinary creative project, from historical research and the initial concept to design and an original visual output.

Drawing on the HERITAGE project, participants explored how historical narratives, cultural identity and personal experience can be translated into a contemporary visual language. The workshop moved through research, moodboards, symbolism and design before participants created a small object or visual prop connected with heritage, origin or identity.

From Personal Story to a Media Project in the AI Era

Led by Simona Vrabcová

A practical workshop exploring how personal experiences, interviews and community stories can be developed into coherent media, exhibition or digital projects.

Participants worked with authentic material, narrative structure, purpose, audiences, formats and communication. The workshop also introduced the ethical and critical use of artificial intelligence for analysing material, identifying themes and quotations, organising ideas and supporting project development.

Portraits of Slovak and Czech Britain was presented as a case study showing how interviews and community stories can be developed into a photographic exhibition and documentary film without losing the original voice of the participants.
